Aerospace And Defence Manufacturing
India's Aerospace and Defence (A&D) sector is rapidly emerging as a global powerhouse, underscored by a significant increase in domestic production and expanding export capabilities. In FY 2023-24, domestic defence production reached USD 16.39 billion, marking a 174% growth since 2014-15, with the country now manufacturing 65% of its defence equipment locally. Noteworthy platforms such as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, INS Vikrant, and the C-295 military transport aircraft highlight India's advanced technological and engineering prowess. Furthermore, defence exports have seen a spectacular increase, totalling $2.7 billion in FY 2023-24, a 30-fold rise over the past decade, enhancing India's stature in the international market. Strategic policy initiatives like the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP-2020), the Technology Development Fund (TDF), and the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative have been instrumental in boosting private sector engagement and spurring innovation, positioning India on the path to becoming a leading player in the global aerospace and defence industry.

- Northeast India, with Assam as its gateway, shares 98% of its border with neighbouring countries, positioning it as a central hub for Aerospace and Defence (A&D) manufacturing.
- Eastern Command, with its 3 corps and a dedicated strike corps, oversees a formidable strength of approximately 3-4 lakh personnel. The Command of the Indian Army has a significant and consistent demand for specialised equipment and supplies.
- Assam is boosting its industrial capabilities with a growing network of roadways, railways, and air connectivity, ensuring efficient supply chain management and faster access to global markets, reinforcing its strategic role as an A&D hub.
- Institutions like IIT Guwahati and the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s regional centre in Assam provide access to advanced research and training, creating a skilled workforce tailored for the A&D sector, thereby enriching the region’s talent pool.
- The Assam government is actively promoting A&D investments with the upcoming Assam Aerospace and Defence Manufacturing Policy, which includes tax reimbursements, investment subsidies and skill development programs to support the A&D sector.
